In 2018, the Newport News FOP Lodge and our Associates have made several contributions to charities, youth programs, law enforcement support groups and the families of fallen officers. We spent over $5,000 on our Annual FOP Cops and Kids Program for children in need and victims of crime in the Hampton Roads area.
We would like to thank all of you in our community who stepped up and gave what you could in an effort to help us with the funding we needed to continue to support our numerous causes. We were able to donate again this year to many of our favorite charities, thanks to the wonderful community support we can always count on. Since we don't have the manpower to do our own solicitations, we do utilize the services of NAS Marketing Company to assist with our fundraising and again as usual, they are doing a good job for us.
This has been another tough year for law enforcement across the nation. We have lost a lot of good people through violence. In the past several months we welcomed Chief Steve Drew to the helm of the Newport News Police Department and so far, he is doing an excellent job. Morale is up and people are working hard and we are definitely seeing a difference in how things are perceived. So far, it looks like our re-organization has paid off and the Crime in Newport News; although still there, seems to be decreasing slightly. We thank him in his efforts to get us on track and keep us there. May God guide and protect us all.
One of the greatest feelings in the world is to see our efforts and financial support brighten the lives of others. In 2018 alone, we held fundraisers for or gave contributions to various charities. Although financially we have had to give less than we like, we have still been able to support some of our needier charities.
In addition, the Lodge supports families of law enforcement, community members, and friends in the greater Peninsula area. Through donations for those in need as well as the efforts of our State Representatives in Richmond and Washington DC.
We have one of the best Associate Lodges in the area. This past year, our Associates held dinners for Newport News Police Academy recruits and their families, a Police Memorial Week breakfast and organized various social functions for Lodge members. One of our biggest hits is our annual Halloween Party. This year, we held our Easter Egg Hunt at the Lodge and it was another success! The FOPA continues to help us shine!
In 2019, I would like to continue our focus on family. We would also like to focus on increasing our membership numbers and membership participation in our events. We will continue to organize more events so our officers, their spouses and their children will be able to benefit from all the F.O.P. has to offer. In an effort to provide our police family with some family fun for members of all ages, we will utilize the lodge as well as other locations to create a safe and comfortable atmosphere for the entire family.
This will be my last year as President. I have held this position for over 12 years now and believe it is time to step down at the end of this term. I feel that I have excellent people in place who can take over and guide the lodge in new directions. I ask everyone to visit our site often and stay safe through 2019! Check back for for updates on future events!
